Background: The Sydney Criminal Lawyers Criminal Law Scholarship was established in 2019 to encourage and support law students who are passionate about pursuing a career in criminal defence, with an emphasis on social justice.
Open to: Australian citizens and permanent residents in their penultimate or final year of studying law in New South Wales or the ACT.
Value: $5,000 per year
Duration:  1 year

1. Background

The Sydney Criminal Lawyers (‘SCL’) Criminal Law Scholarship was established to encourage and support New South Wales and ACT law students who excel in criminal law and are passionate about pursuing a career in criminal defence, with an emphasis on social justice.

2.  Eligibility

Applicants must have Australian citizenship or Australian permanent residency and enrolled in their penultimate or final year in an LL.B, Juris Doctor or Legal Practitioners Admission Board course, or undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, in New South Wales or the ACT.

Current SCL employees are not eligible.

3. Selection Criteria

The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit – especially in criminal law-related subjects – their resume, covering letter and possibly an interview with the firm’s principal.

A Practical Legal Training placement with SCL may be offered to the successful nominee.

4. Value

The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 as a one-off payment which is payable upon the selection of the successful nominee.
